A MAN in his 20s was airlifted to hospital yesterday after his foot was blown off when a gas canister exploded at a Nelson industrial unit.

The North West Air Ambulance helicopter was called into action after the lunchtime incident at J and R Gases in Brunswick Street at 12.15pm.

The 29-year-old man had his left foot blown off and suffered severe injuries to both legs, according to police.

He was flown to the Royal Preston Hospital.

Two other workers at the plant were taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with minor injuries.

The firm provides gases for beer supply in pubs and clubs and for welding.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to J and R Gases where a man suffered severe injuries to his legs after a gas canister exploded.

“A 29-year-old man had his left foot severed and his right leg was also injured.

“It appears to be an industrial accident.”

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “We are aware of this incident and are investigating it with the police.”

Co-manager of the nearby Ultimate Strength and Fitness gym, Shadab Feroze, said: “I heard a loud bang.

“Two fire engines and an ambulance whizzed past the gym and down towards J and R Gases.”
