DISCOUNT fashion retailer TK Maxx has earmarked the former Glen Mill site in Colne as its latest target for a Pendle opening.

Plans have been revealed by the national chain to join Lidl on the vacant land on the redeveloped mill location off North Valley Road.

Just last year the clothing giant had pinpointed a spot at the Burnley Road end of the Asda complex, off Corporation Street.

The store would have joined the under-construction Pure Gym and various smaller retail ‘pods’. But the Glen Mill site now appears to be favourite, after the pub company Marstons withdrew its bid to construct a hostelry there.

Under the fresh bid, a 2,044 square metre building would be erected towards the back of the site, to be served by at least 89 car parking spaces.

Planning agent Chris Smith said: “The approved scheme has evolved in response to operator requirements, with the proposed retail unit replacing the previously approved employment units and family public house/restaurant. TX Maxx intend to occupy the unit.”

An identified access and exit route would remain from North Valley Road, with Hanover Street solely used for leaving. Delivery lorries would arrive and leave via the main road and extra landscaping promised behind Keighley Avenue.

One neighbour has already said: “I have no objection to the building itself. However, as described in previous correspondence, this will add further traffic to my very small street.”

Residents have also called for the exit road in Hanover Street to be moved along the road, instead of halfway down the shopping centre site, with TK Maxx required to fund the works.
