THE pouring rain failed to dampen spirits as hundreds of people turned out to Colne Gala on Saturday.

The event started with a procession of floats which made their way through Colne starting at Shaw Street at 11am waved and cheered by people who lined the streets.

This year the procession featured three 45ft wagon floats, with themes including 'the sixties', 'a teddy bears picnic' and 'ugly bugs ball', there was also a World War II Jeep and Colne firefighters also took part in the event.

The fun continued at Holt House playing field where activities were held throughout the day including a tug of war, a stunt show, a fire brigade demonstration and the final of Colne's Got Talent.

While Water Brass Band, Helen Green Dancers, Colne band Cover Up and majorettes entertained the crowds.

Councillor Neil Butterworth, one of the event organisers who also compered the event, said: "The procession was the best we've had in years, we had more floats take part and lots more people came out to watch as they went by.

"We had a good turn out even though the weather has been bad. It is the people of Colne that make the event what it is, come rain or shine they turn out to have a good time.

"We had a great band from Colne called Cover Up who got everyone dancing along in the rain."

Helen Green, who runs Helen Green Academy of Dance which had three floats in the procession, said: "This year the procession was really well supported, with a lot more people taking part in the procession and coming out to watch.

"We need people and businesses to continue supporting the event so it grows year on year."

Claire Robinson, 29, from Colne attended the event as part of the Pendle Dogs in Need group. She said: "It's been a really good day. The procession was fantastic, lots of people turned out to watch."

Cllr Butterworth added: "The gala takes nearly a year of planning and costs around £4,000 to £5,000 to put, most of which we have to fund ourselves through events.

"There are only six of us on the events team. We are looking for more people to join the team for next year."
