A NELSON care home has been told that it requires improvement after it was criticised for failing to meet the required standards.

An inspection into the care provided by Nelson Manor Care Home, in Barkerhouse Road, carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), found that standards at the home had declined since its previous inspection in 2014, where they were deemed to be meeting requirements.

The 70-bed home was inspected over February 10 and 11 and has since been told to take action to improve standards in a number of areas.

These include taking appropriate action following a safeguarding incident, to plan and deliver care to ensure people’s welfare and safety, the management of medication, arrangements around meal times on the Jubilee unit, which provides care for people with mental health needs, and record keeping.

Recommendations were also made about the development of suitable activities, the maintenance of cleanliness on Jubilee unit, the development of person-centred care on the Jubilee unit and the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

The report said: “The service was not consistently safe. Whilst all staff spoken with had an understanding of safeguarding, we found at the time of the inspection, an appropriate response had not been made to a safeguarding incident.”

The report also continued that people were provided with appetising, nutritious food and were offered a choice at each meal time.

However the report said that during meal times: “The support offered was inconsistent.”

The home was found to have demonstrated a number of breaches of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010 and will have to provide evidence to the CQC that they have addressed the problems.

The home said in a statement: “Nelson Manor strives to provide a high level of care. We will continue to liaise and work closely with the Care Quality Commission ensuring all the recommended improvements are met to enable us to maintain the high level of care we expect for our residents.”
