A NEW Post Office could be opened in Barrowford after the village’s existing branch closed recently.

Villagers were left shocked after its Post Office closed without warning.

Customers arrived at the Spar store at The Fountains, in Gisburn Road, only to discover that the shop was shut.

It is believed that the franchised Spar, which houses the post office counter, went into liquidation with the loss of 26 jobs.

Residents have launched a campaign – backed by Pendle Labour Party – to see services return to the village.

County Councillor Azhar Ali said: “All week I have been in discussions with various parties particularly the Post Office and have received confirmation that a temporary Post Office will be opened quickly in the village possibly in the existing site.

“The Post Office website have now advertised for interested people who would like to open a permanent Post Office and already there has been considerable interest.

“Barrowford Parish Councillor Sue Nike and I would like to thank the hundreds of local residents who have returned the ‘Bring back Our Post Office Campaign’ petition and contacted us to support this campaign.”
