A PENDLE town is celebrating after its high street was named one of the best in Britain.

Barnoldswick was selected from 135 entries to win the Local Centre prize in a national competition ran by the Future High Street Forum.

Judges said they were impressed by the town's 'ability to innovate, collaborate and adapt to changing consumer habits'.

Events such as August's Barlick Beach and May's Bands on the Square festival demonstrated 'a huge sense of community pride', organisers added.

David Whipp, co-chair of Barnoldswick Town Centre Action Group, said: “We are absolutely delighted at the success of Barnoldswick in this national competition. The real reward is in the vibrancy and vitality of our town centre, but to receive national recognition is the icing on the cake.

“We have had a huge team of volunteers working tirelessly to make Barnoldswick such a great place. They have put on some brilliant events and everyone has joined in, including some talented local musicians. The relationship between the traders, residents and volunteers has been fantastic with everyone pulling together to create a very special high street.”

The Government's High Streets Minister, Penny Mordaunt, said the area’s economy had benefited from additional footfall, and vacancy rates had been substantially reduced.

She said: "Communities, traders and businesses are absolutely fizzing with bright ideas and initiatives to make our high streets great places to work, shop and live. I want to extend my congratulations to all of them.

“It’s fantastic to see the team-work and energy that people are putting in to our high streets and this commitment to innovation and collaboration really shone through in all the finalists.”

Other categories were won by Norwich Lanes, Colwyn Bay, Belper, Broxburn, Wantage and Kingston.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "Britain's High Streets have a long and proud history - and a special place at the heart of many communities. This competition celebrates the excellent work that is re-invigorating many of our High Streets and highlights ideas that other places can use.

"High Streets are an important part of our long-term economic plan to help communities reach their full potential, create new opportunities and secure a brighter future for people across Britain. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who entered the competition."
