FOUR of Pendle’s most talented young musicians are set to take to the stage to compete for a share of a £12,500 bursary.

Two vocalists, a cellist and bassoonist will be vying for the judges’ votes when the second annual Pendle Young Musicians Bursary reaches its grand finale.

Last year’s four finalists will also perform at Colne Municipal Hall on Sunday, October 5, from 2pm, before what is expected to be a packed house.

Ruth Hallows, a cellist and Royal Welsh Academy of Music student, bassoonist Sarah Hoyle, who studies at the Royal Academy of Music, singer Jack Herbert, a vocalist and ex-Thomas Whittam Sixth Form student, and singer Georgina Parker, formerly of Burnley College, are up for a share of the award.

Adjudicators Marilynne Davies and Peter Young, who have already heard the competitors in a previous closed round and interview, will assess the finalists and declare a winner.

First established in 2012, the bursary award scheme was set up to give young musicians in Pendle a chance of gaining substantial funding to help them continue their musical studies.

The aim is to provide help towards tuition, instruments, courses and travel. A bursary spokesman said: “This event is the second stage of the amazing journey being undertaken by these talented youngsters and will also be a wonderfully entertaining afternoon.

“The previous four finalists who shared winnings of £12,000, all confirm that it had a huge impact on their musical training, because in consultation with their parents it addressed their immediate musical needs and enabled them to progress.

“This makes this generous competition of unique value to those very talented young musicians lucky enough to live in Pendle.”

The four previous finalists performing as well are singer Samantha Oxborough, currently studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire, saxophonist Emma Johnson, who studies at Leeds and leads a jazz combo, and singers Jade Brett and Laura Schofield, who perform with The Ardenettes group.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and children will be admitted free.
