NELSON charity, Early Break, has been announced as one of six charities shortlisted for a £50,000 prize after members of the public were invited to nominate their favourite good causes.

Comparethemarket.com received more than 1,400 votes after asking people to put forward their favourite regional charities.

The nominations have been narrowed to a shortlist of six and the public will be invited to vote for the winner.

Helen Phipps, head of home insurance at comparethemarket.com, said: “Our recent study found that one in three people believe local charities are overlooked and national charity donations outweigh local cause contributions by two to one.

“We know what a valuable service local charities provide in their communities and what a difference funding can make, which is why we are awarding one local charity £50,000 as part of the Great British Switch campaign."

Early Break in Leeds Road, Nelson, offers counselling, advice and treatment for young people who have issues with drugs and alcohol.
