A JEALOUS kitchen porter threatened to slit his terrified ex-partner’s throat in the early hours of New Year’s Day, after he turned up at a pub she was in, a court heard.

John Daniel Smith, 38, had become abusive while talking to Michelle Wilcock and had shouted: “Who’s this you’re trying to get in bed with now?” as she chatted to someone else at the Greyhound pub in Barnoldswick.

He was then said to have thrown her driving documents around her car, hit her to the head and repeatedly kicked the vehicle.

When police arrived, he told them: “Lock me up. I did it”, and took officers to the damaged vehicle.

He later told them he ‘lost his rag’ but loved the victim, Burnley magistrates were told.

Smith, who says he didn’t strike the victim, admitted assault by beating and damage.

The defendant, of Heyhead Street, Brierfield, was fined £110, with £100 compensation and a £20 victim surcharge.

Enza Geldard, prosecuting, said Ms Wilcock would say she had been in a volatile relationship with the defendant and she had reported assaults by him.

Graeme Tindall, for Smith, said he would say on previous incidents it had been six of one and half a dozen of the other.

They were in a relationship over the Christmas period and he had dropped her off and arranged to meet her later, but didn’t know where she was.
