Improvement needed at Nelson primary school
3:00pm Monday 4th February 2013 in Pendle
HOLY Saviour RC Primary School has been told it ‘requires improvement’ after a visit by Ofsted inspectors.
The school, off Reedyford Road, Nelson, which was previously rated ‘satisfactory’, a category which has been discarded, was visited by the independent watchdog recently.
Ofsted’s report said: “The quality of teaching is not consistently good. Teachers do not always make it clear what pupils are expected to do during lessons.
“Activities do not always challenge pupils, especially the more able pupils.
“Pupils are not always given time to respond to teachers’ comments.
“There is too much variation in the rate of progress between classes, especially in writing and mathematics.
“School leaders have an overly positive view of how well the school is doing.
“A range of plans and actions aimed at improving standards has been introduced but procedures to assess whether these are effective have yet to be put in place.”
Inspectors said the acting headteacher had a very clear idea of the direction she wanted the school to take and was well supported by her leadership team.
They also commented that some teaching was of good quality and pupils felt safe and enjoyed school and behaved well.
Attendance was also above average and improving.
