EAST Lancashire MPs Jack Straw, Gordon Birtwistle and Nigel Evans have called for the controversial new House of Commons clerk to face a hearing before taking up the £200,000-a-year role.
Speaker John Bercow chose Australian Carol Mills for the post, but some MPs have said her experience is insufficient.
The three are backing a campaign by Bernard Jenkin, the Conservative chairman of the Commons Public Administration Committee, for Ms Mills to face further scrutiny by MPs.
The Commons clerk, paid £200,000 a year, acts as the chief executive of the House and is responsible for the running of the property, and 2,000 staff on site.
Blackburn Labour MP Mr Straw said:” I think that such pre-appointment scrutiny would be a good way of resolving this."
Burnley Liberal Democrat Mr Birtwistle said: “Of course there should be a hearing.”
Ribble Valley Tory Mr Evans said: “MPs should be consulted before the job is filled.”
