A COMMEMORATIVE ‘lights out’ event will be held at the Accrington Pals Memorial next week.

The event, which will see lights switched off across the borough to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, will be held from 10pm until 11.15pm on Monday, August 4.

Council leader Miles Parkinson said: “The Royal British Legion hopes to light one million candles across the UK to remember each and every one of those service men and women who gave their lives in the war.

“Please come along and take part in the Hyndburn Lights Out event.”

The event, could see millions of people and businesses join together in a national moment of reflection, 100 years after foreign secretary, Sir Edward Grey, said at the outbreak of war: “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
