    Flood warning for new school

So bosses at the Environment Agency say that the area is vulnerable to flooding and warns us that flood prevention work is needed or millions of pounds' worth of damage may be caused. They want local authorities to stop building homes on flood plains.

They want local authorities to stop building homes on floodplains.

What a pity that they did not issue this warning last summer then, and that Lancashire County Council is building Unity College on the playing fields at Towneley - an area with a high water table next to the River Calder, which drains the moors east of Burnley.

Last summer, Friends of the Earth and many other concerned Burnley groups warned the Inspector of the problems. But he believed that the design of the proposed building would protect it from flooding.

No doubt we shall see - with the 20/20 vision of hindsight. But if there should be weeks of school closures while the building is restored, it will not help anyone's education.

Avril Hesson, Co-ordinator, Burnley Friends of the Earth, Sycamore Avenue, Burnley.

everyone is entitled to their opinion.

sorry dont agree .....i think the new Unity College will have less of a flooding problem than the building they are in now.
