I WOULD like to take issue with a comment made by Linda Green about retired teachers being able to make good money supply teaching.
It is a fallacy to believe that supply teachers earn good money, we don't. I am supply teaching as I qualified last year and, in spite of having a very good degree, have been unable to obtain a permanent post as there are up to 200 applicants for each post.
Only the Lancashire Teaching Agency (connected to Lancashire County Council) pay to scale, and that is only if you work every available school day. Holiday pay for supply teachers is calculated as part of the daily rate, so a supply teacher has to work every day in order to get full holiday pay. In addition, supply teachers do not get paid if they are unable to work through sickness.

I have earned just over £5,000 since September, a grand total of £7,500 pa. I am a single parent, so it is no wonder that my overdraft is stretched to its limit. I have heard that retired teachers get even less work on supply as they are more expensive for the schools.
