New stadium would cause big problems

REGARDING the article relating to the alleged proposals to construct a sports stadium along with shops and a hotel on land at Darwen's Robin Bank site (LT April 24), earlier reports in The Darrener newspaper were headlined "Stadium Sensation" along with the controversial photograph on the front page of a 30,000-seater American stadium.

The Lancashire Telegraph, quite rightly, makes the point that The Darrener newspaper had stated that the picture was an artist's impression of the planned stadium when evidently it clearly was not.

It is in fact an artist's impression of a completely different stadium, in a completely different landscape and of a completely different scale. They might as well have show us the plans for Wembley Stadium or the proposed Olympic facilities.

The misleading picture doesn't really bother me too much. Those responsible will perhaps have to account for their actions. What does disturb me however was missed by the LT and that is the statement in The Darrener that implies that the project would be good for Darwen and compliment the network of new facilities coming to Darwen over the next few years' when in fact there would be several conflicts of interest.

Darwen already has several hotels. Shouldn't we be working towards helping these remain viable and solvent if not to prosper? Retail outlets - you only have to open your eyes as you stroll through Darwen's beleaguered main street and market. Ask the traders, read the papers. Our existing populace needs help not hindrance and competition.

You only have to look at the Redearth site or the empty houses, row upon row of communities wiped away around Queen Street/Hindle Street areas. Is the party concerned going to replicate this?

What is more, the aptly named A666 is already a nightmare of a congested road. The Darwen interchange has in fact made it more so. The Academy will add to the problems and inevitably so would the proposed stadium.
