ON my way to work the other day, I heard an item on the radio saying that the Lib Dem party was championing the teaching of budgeting in schools.
The aim was, it was said, to reduce the number of debt-related propblems.
I think that this is a wonderful idea
However, I think that the government needs to lead by example and to practise what it preaches.

For example, giving public sector workers a guaranteed state pension as a perk seems a good example of jam today and pay tomorrow.
The services received in any particular year are, in this way, being partly paid for by people in the future.
Surely it would be better for the costs associated with services delivered in a particular year to be paid for out of that year's budget.
So, if a government agency decides that it wants to provide employees with a pension, then they should stump up the money out of that year's budget - and invest it until it is needed.
