Who’ll support the low paid?

I WISH to express my astonishment at the following facts: Blackburn with Darwen is going to tear up contracts of employment belonging to my relative along with many of his colleagues.

It wants him to sign a new contract with a reduced salary, rendering him officially low paid.

It seems employment contracts are only sacrosanct when the employees are very well paid, witness Adam Applegarth, who received a severance handout of £785,000 even after the failure of Northern Rock.

He was given this because he had a contract. Of course he could afford to go to law to ensure his contract was honoured. Not so the poorly paid workers in Blackburn with Darwen.

In addition to this wage cut, the Government is abolishing the 10per cent tax rule further, cutting low pay wage packets.

Blackburn with Darwen is a Liberal/Conservative-run council and we have a Labour Government. Which party will support the people on low pay?

J ROBSON, Milton Avenue, Liverpool.
