The writer who claims Darwen was once a ‘true’ Labour town should do his/her research: for many years, until the early 1970s, the Conservatives were in charge of this proud town.
It’s no good using politics to blame the town’s demise. There are many such towns the author quotes as ‘a run-down industrial town from times gone by’.
The majority of residents are proud of their heritage. The Friends of Sunnyhurst Wood and the Friends of Darwen Cemetery devote their time to constantly improving their environment.
The Mayor of Darwen, himself a proud ‘Darrener’, has blamed the minority who dump their rubbish.
Fingers should also point at those who don’t shop locally in the unique markets.
Darwen’s been named as ‘the most patriotic town in Britain’, confirmed by the thousands of pounds raised by the Soldiers Support Group Darwen, who are enormously supported by residents, and the wonderful work of the recently-opened Academy.
Expats came from all over the world to attend the Darwen 1940s Day.
Walk through the many beautiful parks – Sunny-hurst, Bold Venture, Whitehall. They’re free, a glory to nature, and have received many rewards.
There are many loyal businesses who contribute to the town – the newly-installed Darwen Tower dome (pictured) is a masterpiece of dedication from WEC apprentices who gave up their time and looked on proudly as it was installed.
The community awards from Crown Paints speak for themselves.
Darwen may be a reflection of the demise of textiles, but the majority of ‘Darreners’ won’t be interested in who does what.
The majority are pulling themselves up by their bootlaces and getting on with it.
Konrad and Carol Tapp, Darwen.

I hate to contradict you Mr and Mrs Tapp.
Darwen was both a Conservative and Liberal constituency from 1883 to 1983.
Upon it's amalgamation with Rossendale, it was won by the incumbant Rossendale Conservative MP David Trippier.
Darwen (with Rossendale) became a Labour seat for the first time after 109 years with the success of Janet Anderton in 1992 and remained so for 18 years.
Perhaps Mr and Mrs Tapp should do "their" research.
History lessons aside, I wholeheartedly agree with your summing up of Darwen - and more !
