Prescott’s got me praying!

I AM not a religious person, but when I read that John (Lord) Prescott (pictured) was considering putting his name forward for election as one of the country’s first police commissioners, I immediately started to pray!

If he is successful, he will receive a salary of £100,000 a year, have control over police strategy, spending and the ability to hire and fire top officers.

When you consider that we are still picking up the bill for the schemes he dreamt up when Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, is it any wonder that (like the rest of the country) I am on my knees?

John Prescott, who’s he?

Yes, now I remember. He’s the one who either had or has still got three Jags, got himself a girlfriend whilst still married, plays crochet sometimes to impress and put some house furnishings on his government expenses that he shouldn’t have done. Can‘t remember anything else?

Just another ex politician who has done very well for himself after he’s gone. I think he was a Conservative, but if not he now gives the impression to have been one!

Ah, yes, John Prescott, who's he?

A man who rose from Ship Steward to deputy Prime Minster through hard graft and determination and never forgot his roots.

He should be an inspiration to anyone who want's get ahead in life. A man who wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth and didn't go to Private school.

Cameron, Clegg and Osborne all went to private schools with fees now higher than the average annual wage.

Oh for the days of John Prescott and the meritocracy. He's worth ten of them.

I miss John Prescott. In a world where politics has become managerialised and politicians have become clones you could always rely on Prescott to provide a moment of humour.

One of my favourite quotes from him, or 'Precottism', was in a speech that he gave in 2003 when explaining the government's housing policy: "I want to build communities where people say 'this is where I live'".

The other famous quote that is attributed to Prescott is when he told a BBC reporter: "The green belt is a Labour achievement and we mean to build on it."

And after a rough flight he said: "It's good to be back on terra cotta."

Politics is a much duller place without the likes of John Prescott.
