I have been shocked to discover that the RAF has only a paltry 256 combat aircraft (not warplanes). The French air force has 1,023 and the Israeli 1,230. So making allowances for the number of RAF aircraft on overseas duties and bearing in mind that virtually all of its home bases are in eastern England and Scotland, one must conclude that we in North West England have virtually no air defences.
With more money being spent on the army in Afghanistan and the building of the two new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy to go ahead, the RAF is going to have to bear the brunt of proposed different cuts, a truly appalling prospect especially for us in the North West.
