I WRITE in response to the report “New Leisure Centre Looks Hideous” (LT, February 23) in which MP Janet Anderson brands Darwen’s new leisure centre as ‘hideous’ and ‘not in keeping with surrounding buildings in the mill town’.
I find myself in agreement with her sentiments in that the exterior ‘cladding’ made up of blue and terracotta/orange tile work is in fact disgusting.
It would look by far more pleasing and sympathetic if stonework was used instead.
I believe that both modern and traditional can and often do work well together and believe that the glass frontage is actually not really a problem.
After all, Waves in Blackburn has a glass frontage opening on to a highly pedestrianised area and I’ve heard little or no objection to this.
Darwen’s Leisure Centre frontage would look well with either natural stone or slate and this should have been looked into during the planning stages – perhaps by someone as prominent as the town’s MP?
ROBIN JAMES EVANS, British National Party, (address supplied).
