MY child brings home a list of spellings each Monday (from Griffin Park Primary School) and I was gobsmacked at what I saw.
On this week, the spellings were all ending in ‘ay’. Half way down the list I noticed a word had been scrubbed out by the teacher in biro.
On looking at the word underneath, I saw it read ‘gay’.
I couldn’t believe they have taken the time and trouble to erase this word from the list of spellings.
The true meaning of the stated word is ‘merry’ and ‘happy’ and appears in many stories and rhymes.
The teacher is bringing unnecessary attention to the other meanings of the word to a class of seven and eight year olds, many of whom were puzzled as to why their teacher had crossed out this word, as she obviously has issues with its meaning with which they are oblivious.
How absolutely stupid, is all I can say. This is a list of spellings, how are children going to be able to spell words if they are being crossed out?
NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED.
Footnote: Headteacher Ms Catherine Clayton-Grady said: “The classroom teacher had no knowledge it had been crossed out. We believe one of our classroom helpers may have crossed out the word or indeed the children.
“Not everybody in the group had the word crossed out. If parents are upset they need to come into the school to speak to us about it.”
