I wonder if your readers can help me with my hobby, which is collecting brass- embossed colliery lamp checks, or tallies and tokens as they are sometimes called.
These are brass checks with the name of the colliery and the miners’ number on them. He would draw his check along with his lamp from the lamproom before going down the mine.
I am trying to obtain checks from collieries that operated around the Burnley, Todmorden and Accrington areas.
The collieries’ checks I am trying to obtain are as follows: Bank Hall, Clifton, Reedley, Salterford, Fir Trees, Hill Top, Townley, Deerplay, Grimebridge, Copy, Nabb, Old Meadows, Huncoat, Thorney Bank, Moorfield, Bent, Scaitcliffe, Accrington Collieries, Hapton Valley, Calder, Wood End, Fence and Hoddleston.
I would very much like to hear from any former miners from the collieries mentioned above and any help they can give me to obtain lamp checks would be very much appreciated.
