I AM in total agreement with Lynda Hammond (Letters, June 30) regarding attitudes to pride and cleanliness regarding properties and streets in general.
A lot of it has to do with the out-of-control number of takeaways and fast-food outlets which seem to have taken over our way of life. People these days don’t seem to want to cook anymore.
The number of times I see kids around teatime after school in takeaways getting junk food to keep them going alarms me very much. That means that the parents are elsewhere or they can’t be bothered to cook for their own children.
Another aspect of the same thing is children in pubs at teatime. Again, around 5pm, kids in pubs having the usual burger, pizza etc – more junk food!
When I came home from school, there was always a good wholesome meal there waiting. It wasn’t a case of ‘let’s go to the pub, I can’t be bothered tonight’.
The amount of litter and general decline in tidiness is down to one thing – fast-food shops. Reduce the number of these establishments and only then will you see an improvement in cleanliness on our streets. Also, the smells that you come across at times are awful.
I wish we could turn back the clock to when we could go out and come back safe and sound but unfortunately that isn’t the case any more. Sad but true.
