A MAN has been taken to hosptial as a precaution following a huge fire in Lancaster this morning.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue said the man was taken to hospital for checks after suffering the effects of breathing in smoke.

The flames orginiated at Penny Street in the middle of Lancaster shortly after 10am.

The building mostly affected was Inspire Health and Fitness where it is understood that part of the roof has collapsed. The fire is believed to have started in the sauna at the premises.

The initial response of two Lancaster fire engines and crews was increased to involve crews from Bolton-le-Sands, Morecambe, Hornby, Preston, Blackpool, Blackburn and firefighters from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

This response included Aerial Ladder Platform vehicles from Blackpool and Morecambe in addition to a Command Unit from Blackburn.

Neighbouring shops and businesses were evacuated as crews battled to get the fire under control.

A corden was set up from Wilkinson's on Penny Street to JD Sports at Horse Shoe Corner.

By 12.30pm firefighters had the fire under control, and it was extinguished by 1pm.
