Lancashire Constabulary are appealing for witnesses after a Carnforth man died following a collision in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Police said at around 7.50pm on Saturday (March 12), a blue Volvo XC60 was travelling south east along the A65 when it was in collision with a pedestrian walking along an unlit section.

A short time later, a white Mercedes Sprinter van, which was travelling in the same direction, was also in collision with the pedestrian and failed to stop at the scene.

The pedestrian, John Bell, 58, from Carnforth, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement released by his family said: "John lived in Leck all his life. After leaving school he worked at Clapham Agricultural and subsequently C. Haytons in Kendal for over 25 years.

"John was a well-known character in the area, particularly in the farming community. He was a much loved brother and uncle who will be sadly missed.”

The van was later traced in Bradford and two men are helping officers with their inquiries.

PS Rob Gomery, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the sad loss of a man’s life and an investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.

"If anyone witnessed what happened or has any information that could assist with our on-going enquiries I would urge them to contact us.”
