Lancashire drink drivers rate falls dramatically over the festive period

THE number of people caught drink driving in Lancashire over the festive period has fallen dramatically, with just over one per cent of all those stopped testing over the limit.

Police said that from December 1 and January 1, 13,249 tests were administered with just 168 people testing positive or refusing to provide a specimen.

This compares to 2 per cent for the previous year’s campaign and 2.2 per cent for the 2009 campaign.

Supt Peter O’Dwyer said: “The number of people caught drink driving in Lancashire has fallen yet again, which is really encouraging.

“It indicates that the message is getting through to most people and that attitudes towards drink driving are changing.

“One person drink driving is one too many though. We are not complacent and we will continue to carry out enforcement activity throughout the year – not just during the festive period – to target those who persist on driving after drinking or taking drugs.

“Statistics show that around one in six fatal collisions in Lancashire involve either drink or drugs or both and this is simply not acceptable.

“Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive and the only safe option is not to drive if you plan to drink. Our message is simple – do not drink and drive.”

In 2010, 2.9 per cent of those tested aged 25 and under failed the test. But during the 2011 festive campaign, the failure rate amongst under 25s was 1.7 per cent compared to 1.2 per cent for the over 25 category.

County Councillor Tim Ashton said: "These figures confirm that attitudes to drink driving have changed beyond all recognition and it is very encouraging to see that the vast majority of people are aware of the potential consequences and would never take the risk.

"The number of people tested in Lancashire during the Christmas campaign is a great credit to the police and helps to reinforce the message that if you drink alcohol or take drugs before driving there is a very high risk that you will cause a serious accident or be pulled over and tested."

Easy, once again it is the under 25's dragging us down, increasing our insurance premiums by getting leathered by drink or by injecting cannabis. If you consider that the under 25's age group has an 8 year span and the above 25 is at least a 40 year span you see how big a problem these maniac junkies are.
The answer is to ban all under 25's from driving and let them use public transport, then they can get as mindwiped as they like. Less chance takers = less accidents and everyone wins. All aboard, ding ding.

This is as sad a piece of 'writing' I've read on here.

The figures the story relates to amounts to the insignificant total of 0.5% yet you feel it's fertile ground for a cantankerous old Gobi-desert-fannied trout to snatch that cloak of righteous indignation and steam in! Stinks of jealousy, that does.

Why the apostrophe in a number?

Do you have ANY evidence, one single SHRED of evidence, that anyone has ever, in the long history of the world, INJECTED cannabis?

And 'less' chance takers? You meant 'fewer' didn't you but weren't savvy enough to know how to use your mother tongue adequately.

And you'd better hope your dearest wish DOSN'T come true; after all, can you imagine the damage done by these 'under 25's (sic)' to cantankerous auld biddys like you on public transport?

It's common knowledge that everyone has at some point tried injecting cannabis. :0)
As usual, I provide the diving board and you being so intelligent dive right on in. It's like being back in Nam and watching the gooks pull out their own finger nails while I p1ss my sides at you and keep passing the band-aids.
The apostrophe gestapo known as crispy. Next time try harder not to jump in, It gets easier to have you flipping like a dolphin my little pig friend, next I'll have you doing hoops.
As predictable as bean bagging on a rainy day at school, what goes up, enter the crispy. :0) You make me smile, thanks.

All this means is that most of the drunken scum who do drink and drive regularly probably haven't been caught over christmas.

These figures have no real statistical validity as like is not being compared with like. Why did the LT not get a full breakdown of the statistics instead of just accepting skewed data from the police. I am sure that if the information were presented in graph form with age in years plotted against number of positive breath tests and real mathematical tools such as Standard Deviation, Mean and Variance, were employed then we would find spikes in the incidence of drink driving amongst older members of society as well.

I agree lets get the LT to do a poll, do you drink drive at christmas? that would give a more accurate figure.

Is that the best you can do? Why would we poll the population of East Lancashire when the police have the data to hand? Why are you trying to pour scorn on a comment that is asking for full disclosure of the facts available? Is it because that you choose to twist anyone's comments just because you think you can? It is about time that these pages where moderated and people who chose to play Devil's Advocate for purely spurious reasons were not posted.
