Pedestrian dies after Rishton crash (From Lancashire Telegraph)

He never got taken in the helicopter I live across the road from nordan and it looks like the poor man died because they drove away with no blue lights on

I believe he did die, R.I.P fella x

i dont know if the poor guy has passed away, but he didn't go in the helicopter from norden (by the way, great spelling for someone that lives across the road from the school you dont know me !) but they took him away from the incident with blue lights flashing and at some great speed. please get your facts correct

It was just outside the library/newsagents. I think that's just where the roads were closed

There are quite a few cars go flying through Rishton's High street without much anticipation/conside
ration of potential dangers. Several weeks ago the metal railings infront of the Auberge restaurant in Rishton were destroyed by a car. See bad and speeding drivers every day and it's often young lads and unfortunately the white nova (a pretty rare car nowadays) is one of those that I've seen. Whatever happened it must be awful for the chap's family and the driver.

Having seen the damage to the car the outcome could be nothing more than ominous.

In truth this is more down to pedestrians not taking time to utilise the crossings than poor driver behaviour. I worry greatly from experience about a teenage student being knocked down in the near future. They treat motorists with great arrogance and disdain and as such I am surprised this story does not involve a teenager who felt him or herself indestructible.

That said this is a human tragedy for a poor family tonight and I offer my prayers and thoughts.

You will all know now that the man did pass away..Poor man (I knew him). My thoughts are with he's family just now. I will agree with Rishton5507 along with many of you though "Something does need doing about the road". It did make me rather sick the amount of people that came up cliff street just to be nosey, and i still can not believe people taking photo's of the Air Ambulance "Like it was a space ship", and not something that had come to maybe help save somebody's life.For all these people knew that poor person could have been in that air ambulance fighting for he's life,and all they could do is take photos, the thrills some people get out of other peoples misery will always remain a mystery to me. Although I am a little suprised by some of the comments on here?? i really dont think it matters that something is spelt wrong or that the man was crossing at the wrong place - the poor man died and his family and friends will come on here to see words of comfort!!
I was there in a local shop when it happened and i totally agree with the comments about the amount of people being nosey?? it was disrespectful!!

Unfortunately, an incident of this nature was inevitable. I work on the High Street and am aware of a small handful of drivers who seem to think it's a race track. The speed with which they travel is unbelievable & they haven't a hope in hell of stopping quickly if the need arises. I don't know the circumstances of this particular incident so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree. Whatever, my thoughts go out to all concerned. It's a tragedy, whichever way you look at it.

The problem is none rishtoners rushing through Rishton with no regard for the elderly or children attending the health centre, library and local shops. The speed limit should be reduced to 20mph until the Highway planners can solve the problem of getting all the cars from Gt Harwood to the motorway network without having to drive through Rishton. How many more people have to die before the authorities act?

I think it would be beneficial to have a meeting for local residents to determine the worst times for the speeding drivers and then have a couple of officers or pcso's to patrol the road and either stop or note registrations of the cars to be dealt with later, I don't have much experience of Rishton High street but live quite close to Blackburn road in Harwood and it sounds like a drag strip in the early evening and on into the night. It seems to have increased dramatically in the past few months!! I find myself wincing and waiting for the inevitable bang everytime I hear it.

Why is everyone blaming the driver. Yes it was a tragic accident, and my thoughts are with his family. But it was the second accident in two days. A 20 mph speed limit won't help, nor would a speed camera. There is a pelican crossing next to the butchers yet the amount of ppl that come straight out of the shops and walk straight into the road is amazing, there's a zebra crossing outside the roebuck as well yet next to no one uses these to cross safely and when tragedy strikes blame is automatically dumped on the driver, yes he may of been speeding but if the pelican was used in the correct manner ie, wait for green man, look both ways then if safe to cross cross this accident would of been avoided

Not everyone is blaming the driver. He may also be a victim of the dangerous mix of pedestrians and vehicle traffic in the centre of Rishton. The authorities need to monitor what is happening and then make some considered changes to improve safety. Speed limits, pedestrian barriers, signs and relocating the pedestrian crossings should all be considered

I shop in Rishton every day and cross the road several times. Using the pelican crossing isnt safe as a lot of motorists do not stop on the red light they just drive straight through. Also if you are trying to cross on the co-op side of the pelican you cant see any traffic coming from the right as there are always cars parked outside the co-op blocking the view. There is a big car park at the rear of the co-op why cant people park there. Are they too lazy to walk a few feet?
Its the same with the zebra crossing, motorists just drive without stopping.

When the step into a car they have big responsiblities in so far as protecting all road users.
(That includes playfull/boisterous children, elderly, infirm, disabled, incapacitated, drunk, animals and idiot drivers/riders.)

They cant drive around assuming all pedestrians are as responsible as they should be.

People think simply because it says 30mph this is what they HAVE to do, but should realise this is the maximum speed.

Now not for one moment saying this driver was exceeding the limit and at the time of night it's rather hard in Rishton to speed, so i am not blaming the driver.

But elderly cant dash across road when a car suddenly appears from nowhere. And as a driver myself all the dark clothes young people wear sometimes its hard to see them until your almost on top of them, and that is NOT speeding...So common sense by first the car driver (most important) and second a bit of common sense from the young people, think we maybe cant see you, so dress a bit brighter please.

Wow. Just seen the extent of the damage to the car. I'm afraid that doesn't look like a moderate speed collision. It look like the car was going at some speed for that much damage to occur. I wouldn't be surprised if the driver is arrested and charged.

Certainly a speed the wrong side of section 125 of the Highway Code. I wonder if a mobile phone was involved?

Was in co op this morning two old dears where outside talking about the accident and one just stepped into the road between two parked cars and nearly got run over. All because she along with many others are too lazy to walk about ten yards to use the pelican crossing. And that is what needs addressing pedestrians road knowledge

Got to agree with you on that. Our roads today are very dangerous, with people driving way too fast most of the time. I'm not saying speed, and/or dangerous driving was a factor in this particular case, but generally, we all need to take extra care whilst crossing the roads.

And drivers, just slow down will you, and have a bit more patience. Earlier today, I was driving along Bolton Road, doing just about 30 MPH. There was a car so close to me, I couldn't see his number plate. He was obviously annoyed because I was driving within the speed limit. There's just no need. Does it matter if your journey takes a few extra minutes? This also applies to pedestrians just taking an extra couple of minutes to find a safer place to cross, ie a pelican, or zebra crossing.

I have a simplistic view on traffic. The roads and street belong to people, not cars. They were on the planet for millenia before the car was invented, and will be for millenia after the oil runs out.

Yes there are crossing points, but PEOPLE come first. The road should be a 20mph zone, with sped bumps if necessary.

And another very valid point. (And without gong into detail, I know a lot about this)..You do NOT total the front and roof of a saloon car by hitting an old man at less than 30mph....I I'm guessing this young man was doing around 60mph

I am a very close friend of the driver and i can't imagine how he is feeling right now, aswel as the pedestrian's family.
I feel sorry for the poor man who died as it's such a waste of life.
But is it really that hard to use the pelican crossing that was about 70 yards or so away from where he was hit? They are there for a purpose & people need to realise that if you don't cross safely then you are asking for trouble, people seem to forget that it can happen to anybody. My friend isn't one of these teenaged reckless drivers, he wouldn't take any risks that could harm anybody.
As well as the poor man's family, my friend is going to have this haunting him for the rest of his life (this may sound unfair but i can assure you i'm not saying it the way most people will think i am), because of somebody crossing the road carelessly, suffering has been caused on both sides. The man's family has lost a loved one & my friend is probably going to be sent to prison for this, but he didn't ask anyone to sprint infront of his car. People should surely learn from incident's like these! But may the man R.I.P my love & thoughts go to his family x

Drivers are legally and morally responsible for taking potential killing machines through highly populated communities that may contain any number of unexpected hazzards.

If they cant stop with the distance they can see to be clear they must be at fault.

That should be their speed limit.

To drive a car legally and safely requires skill and judgement.

Looks like this car was going way too fast for the conditions.

People and drivers can make mistakes, if drivers accounted for this (by reducing their speed) then this kind tragedy shouldnt happen.

Well all i can say is that if the driver is who ive heard it is, ok rumours, I'm always seeing him speeding like a bat out of hell. The state of the car is proof he was doing more than the 30 mph. OK the man should have used the crossing but how many tiimes have you seen vehicles go through when someone crossing. A man got knocked down in 1995 whilst on the zebra.

I feel for the driver as he has that to live with for the rest of his life. However, he will drive again and has the rest of his life in front of him whilst the family of the deceased has had him taken away in sad circumstances.

“We would appeal for anyone who may have been in the area at the time or who witnessed the collision to come forward and contact police.”

Voluntary contact with police is an uncommon choice in Rishton. Why do appeals of this sort include the condition 'would'? What prevents the police from making the appeal?
