PLANS for a convenience store in Rishton have led traders to begin a campaign against the bid.
The proposed 430square-metre store at the former Bentley garage in Harwood Road is thought to be a Tesco Express, prompting petitions at various businesses.
Though the application has been submitted by Hurstwood Properties, references in the forms mention Tesco delivery vehicles and schedules.
Rishton councillors Harry Grayson and Clare Cleary, who oversaw a public meeting on Monday to discuss the issue, said there was concern amongst both traders and residents.
Coun Grayson said: “There was a high turnout for this meeting, which indicates the strength of public feeling on the matter.
"Our role as local councillors is to act as a voice for the residents and we will be making a strong representation of their views during the planning process”.
Rishton councillor Ken Moss also attended the meeting but had to abstain from debate as he currently sits on the planning committee at Hyndburn Council.
Petitions have already been set up at Rishton Mini Market, Stotts Bakery and Duckworths Butchers among others as traders say they fear another Tesco would kill off small businesses.

I welcome a Tesco's in Rishton. I'm not surprised the local shops are trying to fight it. They've been ripping off Rishtoners for years and can now see their cash cow disappearing. You've only got to compare prices charged at Rishton Mini Market and those of any major supermarket to see the huge differences.

Great news. Whiteheads will be finished, and Scotts pies are the worst in the area.

If my local shops and market were still open when I finished work, I would definitely use them more.
