Rishton traders to fight Tesco Express plans

Rishton traders to fight Tesco Express plans Rishton traders to fight Tesco Express plans

PLANS for a convenience store in Rishton have led traders to begin a campaign against the bid.

The proposed 430square-metre store at the former Bentley garage in Harwood Road is thought to be a Tesco Express, prompting petitions at various businesses.

Though the application has been submitted by Hurstwood Properties, references in the forms mention Tesco delivery vehicles and schedules.

Rishton councillors Harry Grayson and Clare Cleary, who oversaw a public meeting on Monday to discuss the issue, said there was concern amongst both traders and residents.

Coun Grayson said: “There was a high turnout for this meeting, which indicates the strength of public feeling on the matter.

"Our role as local councillors is to act as a voice for the residents and we will be making a strong representation of their views during the planning process”.

Rishton councillor Ken Moss also attended the meeting but had to abstain from debate as he currently sits on the planning committee at Hyndburn Council.

Petitions have already been set up at Rishton Mini Market, Stotts Bakery and Duckworths Butchers among others as traders say they fear another Tesco would kill off small businesses.

Supermarkets don't sell better quality products but their opening hours are far more convenient.

If my local shops and market were still open when I finished work, I would definitely use them more.

I welcome a Tesco's in Rishton. I'm not surprised the local shops are trying to fight it. They've been ripping off Rishtoners for years and can now see their cash cow disappearing. You've only got to compare prices charged at Rishton Mini Market and those of any major supermarket to see the huge differences.

2 small towns.....Rishton and Great Harwood... so..... if the Rishton Tesco goes ahead that means in the space of about 2 miles there'll 2 Tescos, a morrissons, an aldi, 2 whiteheads, a co-op and lots of local shops...............
............. why on earth do we need this many shops?????????????

The Bentley garage should be for the Co-Op - great store and friendly staff, just a shame it's a little too small to have more on offer.

I think its great news, not all of us have a car or a bus pass so the more choice the better.

Great news. Whiteheads will be finished, and Scotts pies are the worst in the area.

Don`t be fooled into thinking that beacuse its Tesco it will be cheaper. The xpress business model is not cut price store. They know they don`t have to. It`s about convienience , at that costs money, Yes expect a few Value Brand loss leaders, but on the whole expect to pay the same prices

It's nice to hear something is opening in Rishton instead of closing down.

When they build tesco at Rishton, will they close the road and cause havoc like at Great Harwood? I can see the concerns from the local business but Tesco do not care about that and just throw their money about and win.

i think to say rishton mini market is a rip off is very narrow minded! for one, the co-op is more expensive! also, big supermarkets can buy in bulk, they have space to store it unlike small shops. when you consider the convinience of not having to get in your car to go to rishton mini market, then youve probably saved the difference in money for petrol. look at the bigger picture.
