Customers protest at closure of Rishton's only bank

CAMPAIGNERS are protesting against the closure of Rishton’s only bank.

Around 260 people have responded to a petition to keep the local HSBC branch open led by ward councillor Harry Grayson and joined by fellow councillors, MP Greg Pope and the area’s Labour group leader Graham Jones.

Campaigners claim that as well as leaving residents in the lurch, businesses and shops will suffer once the last bank leaves the area.

HSBC made the decision to close based on the number of people now using phone and internet banking.

The banking giant has asked that account holders who need in-branch services visit Blackburn or Accrington in future.

Mr Grayson said: “There has been no consultation or advance warning.

“I was only informed as a savings account holder when I received a letter from HSBC telling me they had decided to close the branch as it was not financially viable.

“I thought it was very ironic that the letter was headed with their slogan, ‘The World’s Local Bank’.

“There has been no attempt on their part to find a solution or speak to residents, even though the effects will be far ranging.

“There are working men’s clubs in the area who deal only in cash, for obvious reasons, who will no longer have a bank to deal with.

“Of course they go elsewhere but that means their insurance premiums going up if they have to transport cash further away.

“The effect on businesses in the area couldn’t come at a worse time.

“Many of the businesses on the industrial estate do their banking in the town, and staff who use the bank also come in and spend money in the other shops locally.

“I also find the suggestion that everybody uses phone or internet banking to be poorly thought out.”

The campaign is calling for HSBC to reverse its decision and also plans on involving the financial ombudsman.

Campaigners are also calling on supporters to withdraw their business from HSBC in support of the petition.

Is it any wonder they are losing customers, some of the staff are quite rude.

It's no surprise and was just a matter of time really. Haslingden's HSBC branch closed just less than 3 years ago and there are still 4 other banks in the town centre. Padiham's HSBC branch closed about 18 months ago and there are still 4 other banks there too. HSBC doesn't care about its customers and how they want to do their banking - it only cares about profits. Mind you, it wasn't one of the banks that needed bailing out by the tax payer either. Its a shame for Rishton - people that bank with HSBC will go to a branch in another town, which takes custom away from the shops and other facilities, leading to a more degenerated town centre. The petition is a great idea but, unfortunately, I don't think it will make much difference.

The bank is obviously under used or it would stay open, sadly the people who will lose out are the older generation who dont or cant use the internet for banking. If people returned to getting paid in cash then a few attitudes in the financial world may change. until then a collection of political hopefuls protesting outside the bank waving a placard or two is nothing more than gesture politics.
The English Democrats will put the people first.

It's a business - not a charity!

260 signatures doesn't make a branch profitable, and HSBC can't be blamed for shutting a branch that's not making money

I believe Rishton has a population of between 7000 + 10000 people. If only 260 people have signed a petition, it has either been badly organised, or the people of Rishton don't give a monkeys.
.
Another point. It's all well and good to use internet banking, but how the hell are the local businesses supposed to get the cash there in the first place?

I believe that the closure could be more to do with security and the safety of the staff, who incidently have always been most helpful and polite to me; remember there was a serious robbery there not so long ago.

Given that most of the major UK banks are now "owned" by the government, why don't these auspicious gentlemen pictured, make an appeal to one of those to take it the branch over.

I am sure that most people do not want to see any more Banks going to the government for a hand-out, so as such, painful as it is, you can understand HSBC putting business first.
