A 10-DAY-OLD baby was inches from death after a car hit a pram on a pelican crossing.

Proud new father Mihai Cracrun, 20, had been pushing the pram back home after dropping his partner’s other two children off at St Charles’ Roman Catholic Primary School in Rishton when the incident happened.

He was starting to walk across the crossing in High Street, Rishton, once the green man was lit up, when he realised a car was heading straight for him and the carry cot.

He pulled the pram back, with baby Freddie inside, but it was still clipped by the car.

Another woman was also hit by the car.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene around 9.15am on Thursday.

Mr Cracrun said: “I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do.

“The baby was asleep when it happened.

“He was still asleep after but then I wanted to check he was ok so I picked him up and he obviously woke up.

“I was crossing on the pelican crossing and the green man was on.

“Two other women were also crossing the road.

“I heard the car in the background and pulled the pram back, the car still hit my pram in my hand.

“After the car hit the pram, it hit one of the women.

“She went flying. She hit her head on the windscreen.

“The pram was damaged but Freddie was okay.

“The doctors told us the baby is fine but they are going to keep an eye on him and observe him.”

Freddie’s mum Tarnya Cullen was at her home in nearby Spring Street, as she is recovering from a caesarean section, when she was told about the accident.

She said: “My aunty came rushing into the house and said you need to get dressed, your partner and baby have been hit by a car.

“My first thought was that the baby was going to be dead. I was distraught.

“My aunty drove me to the Cabin Surgery in Rishton where Freddie was being checked over.

“I’m just relieved Freddie is okay.

“So many things could have happened for this to turn out very differently.

“My baby could have been killed.

“The woman who was hit was thrown in the air, she’s lucky to be alive.”

A police spokesman said: “A vehicle hit a red traffic light and then hit a pram.

“The woman and the baby suffered minor injuries.

“The woman suffered an injury to her arm.

“The vehicle hit a traffic light first and then was involved in a collision with a pram.

“An ambulance arrived on the scene.

“The baby was fine.

“The woman was knocked over but is ok.

“The 18-year-old female driver has been reported for summons for driving without due care and attention.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We responded to reports of a road traffic collision on High Street in Rishton and received the call at around 9am.

“We sent two ambulance crews to deal with an incident.

“One of the ambulances went to Royal Preston Hospital.”

Police said the woman hit by the car was still being treated in hospital.
