CREATURES big and small were the centre of attention as a church held its second pet blessing ceremony.

Rishton Methodist Church threw its doors open to cats, dogs and rabbits to celebrate the special relationship between humans and their pets.

Around 70 men, women and children were at the event, which organisers described as a success.

Beryl Rushton, who organised the event, said: “After the success of last year’s event it was something we felt we had to do again,

“Animals are so loving and protective of their owners’ so we wanted to thank them for everything they do and bless them.

“It was something different and it was about bringing the community together, whether they attend church or not.

“It has been another successful event and it was great to see so many people interacting together. We were also blessed with good weather.”

The service, conducted by Rev Geoffrey Hays featured prayers and hymns, including All things bright and beautiful. The pets were then blessed in the church building.

Rev Hays said: “The service was about acknowledging the importance of pets in people’s lives and celebrating it.

“Pets bring a lot of good to people’s lives and are their for the major human experiences, like sickness and grief.

“I would like to thank all those people who attended and took part in what was a special event for so many people.”

Following the blessing there were refreshments for both humans and animals.

Jessie Seed, who lives in Accrington and attended the event with her dog Jazz, said: “This is the second year the church has done it. I attended it last year and really enjoyed it so I decided to bring Jazz to get blessed again.

“I think it is a really good idea. She sits there quietly which makes a nice change.

“It’s nice to see the children bringing their pets and really getting involved.”
