A TEENAGER led police on a high speed chase, driving at more than three times the speed limit, after they tried to stop him for driving without insurance.

Blackburn magistrates heard Kyle Thomson reached speeds in excess of 90 mph and shot numerous red lights before he eventually lost control and crashed into a garden wall.

Thompson, 19, of Howarth Street, Rishton, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance and other than in accordance with a licence. He was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced on January 30.

Enza Geldard, prosecuting, said police saw a silver Audi A3 travelling towards Rishton from Whitebirk at 2 am and their onboard computer revealed it was not insured.

"Instead of stopping when the officers illuminated their lights it accelerated away towards Rishton, at one point doing 93 mph in a 30 mph zone," said Mrs Geldard.

In the centre of Rishton the car turned onto Walmsley Street and raced through the side streets before re-emerging onto Blackburn Road, heading back towards Blackburn.

It went through red lights when it reached Whitebirk Roundabout and was doing 60 mph on the wrong side of the road as it raced up Burnley Road.

The pursuit continued on Accrington Road, Higher Audley Street, Bennington Street, Haslingden Road and Rockliffe Street before crashing into a wall on Pritchard Street.

Colleen Dickinson-Jones, defending, said she didn't believe she could persuade the magistrates their sentencing powers were adequate.

"There are many aggravating features and I accept this will go to the Crown Court," said Mrs Dickinson-Jones.
