A PEDESTRIAN was left with serious head injuries and a broken leg when he was hit by a car which crashed in a children's nursery.

The man was one of two pedestrians who were knocked down by a white Proton Persona Compact in Tennyson Avenue, Oswaldtwistle, around 10pm last night.

Police said the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle, hit the footpath then collided with the Early Start Pre-School Nursery and also knocked down a lamppost in the process.

Firefighters, police, paramedics and the Specialist Urban Search and Rescue team were called to help make to scene safe.

A Hyndburn building inspector was also called to the scene by police.

The pedestrian who suffered serious head injuries was conscious at the scene whilst being treated by paramedics and the firefighters. He was rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The other pedestrian, the driver of the vehicle and the passenger all suffered minor injuries. They were also taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The driver was breathalised by officers but the test came back negative.

The road was closed for more than one and a half hours.

Watch Manager Keith Cunliffe said: "We assisted paramedics at the scene giving first aid to the injured pedestrians.

"The car had crashed into the nursery building in Tennyson Avenue which left a hole in the side of the wall.

"Two pedestrians were injured and the specialist Urban Search and Rescue team who deal with major incidents were called to the scene."

Inspector Nick Williams-Jones said: "It appears the vehicle has lost control for some unknown reason, which is under investigation.

"The vehicle then hit the footpath and collided with a building and hit two pedestrians, one has received a bad head injury.

"If anybody has witnessed or has any information regarding this incident I would ask them to come forward."

I hope your determination pays of Kelly as I have many atime walked down that road in the day time and there has been people speeding excessively. This is very scary especially since I have 2 babies in the pram at the time, also if this had a been day time, there could have been some parent and child coming out of the nursery leading to more people being injured. Like you say your brother and cousin did not ask to be mowed down and its a disgrace that anyone would say well the driver is shaken, so he bloomin well should be. Im so glad to hear he is pulling through, and lets hope we can get the road humps sooner rather than later, best wishes

It was my brother & cousin that wer victims of this young lads reckless driving & fair enough he maybe be shaken up but how on earth do you think we feel. We spent the 1st 2 week in intensive care hoping & praying that my brother would pull through & believe me it was the most scariest saddest time of our lifes I felt like my heart had been ripped out & being his big sister i wanted to swap places with him cos of the pain he is going through I couldn't bare seein him like that. He is out of danger now thank god but it is gonna take a long time for him to recover mentally aswell as physically. The sad thing is I dnt think this is going to be a wake up call for reckless drivers but we will not let this lie. What happened to my family isn't just goin to be brushed under the carpet. My brother & cousin didn't ask the driver to mow them down at a great speed & so him being shaken up means absolutely nothing to me.

I agree its not always young drivers that cause accidents but in this case judging by the drivers age he was inexperienced! I dont agree that he is sensible, becuase if this was the case then he would not of been speeding on a road like this! If you had seen the damage that this pathetic idiot had caused you would know that he is not responsible and should never be let behind the wheel of a car again!!!

The pedestrians that were hit by this car are my fiance and his cousion, it WAS the driving that caused this accident, people should not be speeding any way but when an inexperienced driver attempts the kind of speed that this driver was doing he is no longer in control of his car. The driver may be badly shaken but my fiance is still in intensive care almost 2 weeks later with too many injuries to list, and we still haven't been told when he could be out of there? His cousion is now out of hospital and is doing ok (physically). I was at the scene before any ambulances arrived and had to tend to my fiance, who was covered in blood and gapeing wounds, almost dieing, whilst the driver walked around lookin unharmed? I also saw the car and, judging by the state of it, it had hit my fiance, his cousion and the wall at great speed.
To Lewis Hodge - I have been driving for over a year, and i have a kitted up car, but i don't put my foot down on roads like harvey street because its not safe, your just a pathetic child, try standing next to your partners bed for 2 weeks not knowing if they're going to pull through then see if you still have the childish attitude about driving!

its not jus young drivers you no that have accidents. me and my 3 year old son were crossing at the crossing near the co-op not long ago, waited for the green man and almost got killed by an old age pensioner that sped through the lights on red. You critise young drivers, well open your eyes an take a look at the world around you. its all types of peaople that speed and cause accidents so dont just blame it on young new drivers. experienced people have accidents too. And as it goes i acctually know the driver involved and let me tell you, he is a very responsible young man who is now badly shaken.

its not jsut young drivers who cause accidents. and not all young drivers with body kits are lunatics either.

the police wont do anything about it because they are to busy having meetings about stopping underage drinking to be out on the streets actually stopping or solving crimes.

cars frequently speed up and down new lane past my house even though there is a speed camera, most people just dont care about paying the fine. there have been loads of accidents on new lane, most involving young children. its going to take at least one death before the police even consider doing something.

I have lived in Ossy for over 25 years and when I was little it was far safer crossing the roads. Now I have kids and I am really worried about the drivers (some not so young)
In Ossy they think it is a race circuit. The police could have a 24 Hour Speed vehicle and would make a fortune. The amount of idiots who want suped up cars with body kits and really noisy exhausts annoys me too. They need to get a life and not try to take others. There is a lad near me that hasn't got his licence yet but already has a car (parked on a pavement) it has the body kit, big exhaust and I know straight away what kind of driving will be done. Young drivers should not be able to drive this type of car until at a sensible age. I have never thought of having a car like this and it is a joke.
The amount of people I know who have been involved or died in accidents due to reckless driving and breakneck speeds is well over 10 and this is alarming and for some reason this doesn't put people off. Wake up!!!!

I bet it was some idiot driving at lunatic speeds, i go down Harvey street often and some people think that its ok to put their foot down on that stretch of road for some reason?????? WHY WHY WHY!! it's so annoying!! the amount of young kids who play on Whiteash and the bmx track you would think peple would be extra cautious, i know this happened at night but the idiots don't seem to care what time of day it is. I was driving through ossy the other day going past ossy mills and some lunatic was heading towards me doing atleast 60mph!!!! what does it take for these idiots to realise what they are doing!! i for one am sick of them.
