Oswaldtwistle bowlers see red over scruffy greens
BOWLERS and a leading councillor are calling for action to tackle the ‘scandalous’ state of the crown greens once rated as one of the best in East Lancashire.
The team captains at the Rhyddings Park Oswaldtwistle venue, traditionally considered the most chall-enging in the local leagues, said that they were now embarrassed to welcome rival clubs because of long, soggy grass which is ruining matches.
They now want Hyndburn Council to rip up its green keeping rota and get a specialist down to revive the greens and get them back to “tip-top” condition.
Oswaldtwistle councillor and the borough’s Tory opposition leader, Peter Britcliffe, raised the issue at Hyndburn Council meeting.
He told the Labour leader Miles Parkinson that he been receiving complaints for weeks from the bowlers of Rhyddings Park because the grass was not being mowed. Cliff Hope who is captain of Oswaldtwistle Conservative Club’s Blackburn league team, said: “It is scandalous. This was one of the most challenging and tricky sets of greens in the local leagues.”
Garry Stephenson, captain of ‘Ossie Cons’ Great Harwood league team, said: Two or three years ago it was tip top, one of the best greens in the area. It’s just embarrassing to have other teams here.”
Great Harwood and district league secretary Steve Dowber said: “It has been a bad summer. We have had problems at other greens too.”
