Despair as Oswaldtwistle ‘lifeline’ lunch club closes
1:51pm Thursday 10th May 2012 in Oswaldtwistle
PENSIONERS in Oswaldtwistle have been left with nowhere to go after funding for their luncheon club was stopped.
Residents at Springfield Mews sheltered accommodation, in Simpson Street, who have been attending Oswaldtwistle Community Centre, in Harvey Street, have found themselves lost without the vital social lifeline the dinner club provided.
Pat Hadfield, who has been going to the club for four years, said she was ‘really upset’ that the members could no longer meet.
She said: “They have suddenly stopped the funding with no notice and we couldn’t even say goodbye to anybody.
“A lot of these people in Springfield Mews have nobody and it is a day out for them, it is just such a blow.”
Mrs Hadfield, 62, has suffered two strokes and has had three heart operations and said the club was important for helping her stay active.
She said: “The people are wonderful there and it gets you through things.”
Peter Britcliffe, leader of the Conservative party in Hyndburn, said: “The numbers of people going to the club have dropped and we are finding great difficulty in getting funding for it.
“An additional problem is that the Oswaldtwistle Community Association no longer exists.
“It is really sad but we can only explore different avenues and if it is at all possible it will come back – we have not given up on it.”
