A TEENAGER who hit ‘rock bottom’ now has a bright future ahead of her thanks to the Salvation Army.

After a series of family rows, Amy Wynne, 16, moved into her own flat while studying for her GCSEs.

She juggled school work with a part-time job, and tried to cope with living alone, but found it all too much.

After her exams she took an overdose because she feared she had done badly.

In fact the bright youngster, who attended Rhyddings High School, gained 13 GCSEs, including one A* and four A grades.

Amy who was also struggling with the death of her father, was then admitted to Accrington’s Salvation Army crossroads lifehouse, which helps homeless young people.

Now she is being supported by the project and has enrolled on a science course at Blackburn College to pursue her long-time ambition to become a veterinary nurse. She is also reconciled with her family.

Amy, from Oswaldtwistle, said: “My dad, Tony Wynne, died two years ago. We only found out he had cancer a week earlier.

“I later moved out from my mum’s after family disagreements and eventually I got my own flat. I was still at school.

“I was working in a cafe in Accrington to earn some money to eat and was worrying I’d failed my exams.

"It just got too much and I couldn’t cope.”

Things came to a head days after her final GCSE when Amy took an overdose of paracetamol tablets.

After being admitted to hospital, Amy spent three weeks in Royal Preston Hospital, where she says despair turned to hope.

She said: “I’ve done a lot of talking since about my dad and how that affected me and I look on things positively.

“Without The Salvation Army, I don’t think I would have been able to go back to studying. The staff here give us so much support.”

Crossroads offers accommodation and support to homeless young people, aged 16 and 25.

Centre manager Lee Robinson said “All the staff here are so proud of Amy.

"To get so many top grades despite what she has been through is amazing.

“It’s so great to have the privilege to play a part in her continuing to pursue her dreams.”
