PEOPLE across Hyndburn are being urged to get behind the borough’s biggest charity fundraiser and make this year the best ever.
Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club is hoping to attract hundreds more teams and local causes to the fifth annual Great Charity Walk.
This year rotarians hope to see pubs coming forward with causes their regulars are passionate about so more cash can be spent locally.
Application forms and brochures have been distributed at 100 Hyndburn pubs in a campaign which also hopes to support the borough’s dwindling pub trade.
The Lancashire Telegraph is supporting the event.
Rotarian Michael Jackson said: “Obviously we would rather see people raise funds locally on things their neighbourhoods or neighbours need, such as providing youth facilities or helping someone disadvantaged who needs support.
"Sometimes smaller groups of fundraisers need a focal point, a place to get together and we are hoping that pubs will be the way to do that.
“If people think there are facilities in their neighbourhood which are missing or that there is a local cause or charity they would like to support, they can ask their local pub to support them through this campaign.
“It would also be brilliant to see more people putting pubs at the heart of the community.
"I remember when pubs were bustling with people every night but more recently it has been very hard times in the pub trade.”
The walk, which takes place on Sunday May 9, follows the same circular seven mile course as last year, starting and finishing at the Junction 7 Business Estate opposite the Dunkenhalgh Hotel.
Walkers start on Blackburn Road before taking the canal towpath through Church and Rishton before heading towards Great Harwood and Mercer Park.
The walk’s organisers have a list of recommended charities that teams can support, but are also keen to stress that pubs - as well as all other types of team - can raise cash for their own cause.
All participants of the walk, which last year raised a total of £50,000, get to keep the funds they have raised for the cause of their choice.
