ACTION has been taken to try and cut down on speeding at two notorious hot spots.

Interactive speed indicators have been placed in Thwaites Road and Broadfield in Oswaldtwistle by Lancashire County Council after concerns were raised about speeding.

The sign flashes the speed to oncoming drivers in an attempt to make them aware of their speed to encourage them to stick to the speed limit.

A number of accidents have been noted in the area over the past 12 months.

County Council bosses said the signs have been put up for this week and have shown to help reduce speeding.

County Cllr Peter Britcliffe, who represents Oswaldtwistle on Lancashire County Council, said: "There are a a number of roads around Oswaldtwistle that face issues with speeding.

"Broadfield going into Fieldings Lane is clearly one of the roads facing troubles, and so is Thwaites Road.

"I'm please to see these schemes are going ahead.

"A lot of residents have got in complaints to me about drivers going too quickly.

"Hopefully this will make drivers more aware and make roads safer for everyone."

Last year several crashes were reported in the areas, with one at the junction of Thwaites Road and Blackburn Road, leaving two men needing treatment in hospital after a two vehicle crash.

Broadfield is also home to Broadfield Specialist School and runs on to Fieldings Lane, where residents called for action last May.

This was after a crash saw an 18-year-old man from Accrington suffer a fractured pelvis and chest injuries.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "The interactive speed indicator signs have been shown to help reduce speeding by making drivers more aware of their speed, and the speed limit.

"When communities contact us with concerns about speeding we discuss the issue with the police, and one of the first options we look at is often to use one of these signs to make drivers aware they are speeding and encourage them to slow down.

"We will continue to use them if the concerns persist."
