A HIGH school has called on parents to ditch aerosol deodorants for roll-ons to prevent ‘a major incident’.

Headteacher at Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School, Paul Trickett, has put out the appeal to protect a child at the school who suffers from a medical condition.

In an official statement, he asked that students ‘no longer use aerosols’ at the school, in Haworth Street.

Mr Trickett said: “We have got one child in school who had a bad reaction which could have hospitalised him.

“We have put this into immediate effect and asked if parents could provide children with the roll-on alternative to avoid any situation where this child or any other would be affected.

“We also thought that there would be an environmental benefit.

“In any school where you have unique situations you must react to them in a unique way.

“It is a potential hazard and one I think we can remove.”

The new policy has been introduced due to ‘a number of incidents’ where students reacted badly to aerosols.

Lancashire County Cllr Munsif Dad has shown his support for the action taken by the school.

Cllr Dad, portfolio holder for health and communities, said: “I think it is good that Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School and the headteacher are looking at the health and wellbeing of all the students.

“If there are any students at risk of anything, he is right to take action.

“I support the headteacher in taking action, especially where situations jeopardise the health of children.”

A letter sent to parents and carers of children thanked them for their cooperation in ensuring that the school was a safe and healthy environment.

The official statement put out on Thursday by the headteacher said: “We have had a number of incidents where students have reacted badly to the use of aerosol deodorants.

“We have one student in particular for whom this could be a major problem.

“In order to avoid what could be a major incident I would ask that students no longer use aerosols but instead could they please be provided with a roll-on type."

“I thank you in advance for your support.”
