A MUM and baby had a lucky escape after being alerted to a fire in a tumble dryer by smoke alarms.

Hyndburn firefighters were called to the blaze at a house in Thwaites Street, Oswaldtwistle, at around 1.30pm yesterday.

Two pumps attended and a crew of around eight firefighters used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze.

The pair were taken to hospital as a precaution but not believed to be injured.

There was light smoke damage to a room in the property.

A fire spokesman said: “A mother and infant had a lucky escape today after a tumble dryer caught fire.

“Luckily, she had working smoke alarms installed which alerted her the the blaze and allowed her to get herself and her child to safety."

“There have been a number of tumble dryer fires nationally over the last few years and the safest advice is clean the filter after every use, do not operate dryers while asleep or out of the house, make sure you have working smoke alarms fitted.

“If you have any doubts about any of your appliances, contact the manufacturer.”
