A MAN has been jailed for more than three years after admitting stabbing a mum in an attack in Oswaldtwistle.

When he appeared at Preston Crown Court, Gary Oldham, 41, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Amy Newton, 26.

Oldham, of St Paul’s Court, Oswaldtwistle, was initially charged with attempted murder after armed police were called to Miss Newton’s terraced house in Havelock Street at around 4pm on September 29.

But he pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon.

He was given three years and four months in prison for the wounding and eight months, to be served concurrently, for possessing the weapon.

Miss Newton, a former pupil at Rhyddings Business & Enterprise School, was found by police to have knife wounds to her abdomen and shoulder and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance.

It is understood three children were inside the house at the time of the attack and police said they were not all Miss Newton’s.

Oldham was arrested the same day after armed police surrounded his home in the town.

At the time of the attack, local councillors and residents were in shock as armed police and a helicopter arrived on to the scene.

Cllr Peter Britcliffe, Tory councillor for the St Andrews ward, said at the time: “Whenever something like this happens it is of great concern but even more so when it happens more close to home. My thoughts are with the victim and her family.”

Resident Tommy Henderson said: “I was on the street when all hell broke loose. Four or five police cars came flying up the road and there were around three police officers with guns. The police were going into houses.”

Judge Stuart Baker ordered Oldham to pay a victim surcharge of £120.
