Oldham, of St Paul’s Court, Oswaldtwistle, was initially charged with attempted murder after armed police were called to a terraced house on Havelock Street at around 4pm on September 29.

Miss Newton, a former pupil at Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School, was found to have knife wounds to her abdomen and shoulder and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance with injuries which were not described as life threatening.

It is understood three children were inside the house at the time of the attack and police said they were not all Miss Newton's.

Oldham was arrested the same day after armed police surrounded his home in the town.

In the dock, Oldham spoke only to confirm his identity and enter guilty pleas to the charge of wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

The prosecution accepted the pleas and the charge of attempted murder will not proceed.

Oldham was remanded in custody and will return to court to be sentenced following the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

There was no application for bail and he has been warned to expect a prison sentence.

At the time of the brutal attack local councillors and residents were in shock as armed police and a helicopter arrived onto the scene.

Cllr Peter Britcliffe, Tory councillor for the St Andrews ward, said at the time: "Whenever something like this happens it’s of great concern but even more so when it happens more close to home. My thoughts are with the victim and her family.”

Resident Tommy Henderson said: “I was stood on the street when all hell broke loose. Four or five police cars came flying up the road and there were around three police officers with guns.

“The police were going into houses.”
