FIRES which destroyed several buildings at an allotment site in Oswaldtwistle were started deliberately, police have said.

Three sheds and their contents were destroyed by arsonists during the blaze at the site on Heys Lane, which took fire crews two hours to deal with.

Two other buildings were badly damaged by the firebugs.

The cost of replacing the destroyed outbuildings and contents is expected to run into thousands of pounds.

A plot holder at the site said those with allotments were “devastated” at the damage.

The 64-year-old, who did not wish to be named, said: “I heard first thing this morning and came down. The sheds were in neighbouring plots to mine.

“I saw one of the allotment-holders come down and as soon as he saw the damage he just turned around and walked away, he was too upset to stay.

“I brought my 11-year-old son down and he was upset. He doesn’t know why anyone would set these fires. They’re idiots.

“It’s the summer holidays and at its busiest down here but this has knocked us.

“The council have been down and said they will help and we will rally round to assist.”

A fire service spokesman said: “Two crews from Hyndburn Fire Station were in attendance where three allotment buildings were well alight.

“It quickly became apparent that these fires were started deliberately.

“Three separate building wouldn’t spontaneously-combust at the same time.

“Five outbuildings were involved in fire, three of them destroyed.

“It took two fire engines and ten officers more than two hours to extinguish the fire.”

Councillor Ken Moss, Cabinet Member for Allotments, said: “It’s extremely sad to hear the news of the damage to these allotments at Heys Lane.

“Especially as the fires were deliberately started.

“Allotments are extremely popular and make a big difference to people’s lives.

“They offer a place for quiet contemplation and the chance to get plenty of fresh air and exercise while growing your own vegetables and fruit.”
