Riddle of high-speed car chase through Blackburn and Hyndburn

POLICE were “mystified” by a Ford Mondeo which sped off and led them on a five-mile high-speed pursuit.

The car raced through red lights and reached 60mph on residential streets in a bid to escape officers.

The incident began in Fecitt Brow, Blackburn, and led through Shadsworth, Knuzden, Oswaldtwistle, Church and Accrington, before police lost the car, which was later found abandoned in Charter Street.

Three men from the vehicle, who are believed to be in their 30s, are still being hunted.

Officers said they had checked through crimes in the area at the time, that the incident could be linked to, and had so far found nothing.

Police said that the pursuit may have started because the driver may have been banned or had no insurance.

Inspector Gary Crowe said that an officer spotted the vehicle being driven erratically and attempted to pull it over at 2.30pm on Thursday. But the car sped off.

The car completed a number of “dangerous” overtaking manoeuvres. Insp Crowe said: “The car was being driven very recklessly. Luckily no-one was hurt, but the decision was made to back off.

“The first officer who tried to pull over the car in Fecitt Brow was an advance pursuit trained officer and he was able to assess the risk as it started and continued.”

He said that the car, which has been recovered by police, had not been reported stolen.

The car was driven from Fecitt Brow to Rothesay Road, North Road and into Audley Range.

It then sped into Accrington Road and ran through red lights in the Intack area and overtaking numerous vehicles through Knuzden and Oswaldtwistle.

From Henry Street the car turned into Tanpits Road, where officers lost the vehicle as it moved along Blackburn Road before driving into Willows Lane.

From Willows Lane the car went through Brown Street, Richmond Street, Richmond Hill Street and Willows Lane again before being abandoned in Charter Street.

Anyone with information can contact police on 01254 51212, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I agree, every story is the same, it is almost like the Telegraph pick and choose what you are allowed to reply to, it is bordering on racist in favour of the ethnic minorities, that is if they are minorites anymore since i left the UK.

The reason comments are not allowed on the gang violence story is that it is a court report.
The Lancashire Telegraph does not allow comments on any stories in which someone has been arrested, charged or appeared in court, even when the proceedings are concluded. This is done for legal reasons

As someone who works closely with the ethnic minority community, one thing is for sure. They do not feel that the LET does anything in their favour. Taking it as a given that 99% of the ethnic minority are Muslim, you only have to look at the stories which have appeared recently how the LET has used editorial power to create mis-information leading to ill-judged, racist and ignorant comments been posted. As for gang crime, i have not heard of incidents where there have been shootings in public, street fights involving large groups with weapons or systematic beatings of gang rivals here in Blackburn. I have heard of this and indeed witnessed it in Manchester and also seen lots of fighting on friday and saturday nights in Blackburn town centre. Not many ethnic minorities seen there! So come on guys get a grip on reality.

I over heard kids last night talking about this, they claimed it was a 13 year old lad who was driving the car from Blakewater collage,I thought they were making it up but upon reading this guess they was not.

You obviously don't read the Telegraph, what about the shooting(in broad daylight) behind Accrington rd. Also the gun shots on Queens park rd, not forgetting the many reported street fights in the Audley area. Or is this not reality in your book?

We are talking here about gang related violence. Maybe you ought to look up the definition of 'gang'. Yes the gunshots did occur just as they did in the recent robbery in Cherry Tree. Yes, these were robberies and not gang land fighting and Blackburn like many other towns are not exempt from this type of crime. In terms of the fight in Audley, i will admit that i missed that one. I think i was out of the country, therefore cannot comment on it. If you say it was a street fight then i will take your word for it.

Paul I would agree with you if recent archived articles hadn't indicated to the contrary.. but if im wrong please set me straight... I thought it was a brave move by the LET to publish the story last year about the grooming of girls (listed below).. it took some courage to run that story. I appreciated it because if people dont identify there as being a problem.. people will carry on blissfully ignorant or buring their heads in the sand. @voiceofnoreason. The fact of the matter is that there is an Asian gang culture in this town and across the country.

I've compiled a list for everyone, showing where the LET has allowed/disallowed comments and some news links found by typing asian gang + blackburn into google... you cant believe everything you read but then again how much of whats going on is actually printed? 2 years ago on the outskirts of Doncaster, a large gange of asylum seekers went on the rampage.. violence/rape.. in hexenthorpe.. the town was cordoned off by police and the internnet news stories were removed the next day... anyway her's the list if anyone can be arsed listening by this point.. make your own mind up.. either way it probably won't make a difference, i just dont like being told by people like voiceofno reason that there is no problem.. it insults mine and evryone else' intelligence

TinaWeez I think you are probably right. i just don't see why, if that is the case, LET can't just say... "Enough's a enough, we won't allow comments on anything anymore", it seems selecting which stories have freedom of speech applied to them hasn't worked so far and now comments are being posted under non-related articles.

Just to reiterate our position to try and quell conspiracy theories.

We have hard and fast rules where we allow comments on EVERY story until someone has been arrested.

On ANY story where legal proceedings are ongoing (arrested, bailed, charged, on trial etc) we CANNOT allow stories. This is a legal requirement - comments on an active legal case could be perceived as contempt of court.

Additionally, we have chosen not to allow comments on ANY story AFTER someone has been convicted or acquitted.

You can comment on ALL other stories - including crime where no one has yet been arrested.

These are hard and fast rules applied to every story and are not affected in any way by the ethnic background of the victim, the suspect, the judge, the solicitors, he reporter, the moderator etc.

SEVEN taxi drivers who ignored strict licensing rules have been suspended and hauled before a disciplinary committee.

The cabbies, who work across Burnley borough, were caught out in a sting involving undercover police and council officers.

In it, the seven were caught illegally picking up passengers without pre-bookings, driving without insurance and failing to properly display their drivers’ badges.

Some have been fined as much as £700 and handed eight penalty points, and all are due to face a Burnley Council disciplinary panel to decide whether they should be stripped of their licenses.

Coun Frank Ashworth, chairman of the council’s licensing committee, said: “We do occasionally do these types of stings and they are especially worthwhile at weekends.

“Private hire vehicles should not be picking up passengers without pre-bookings because they are not insured but they are obviously trying it.

“Now there is a very high possibility that we will revoke their licenses. We have got to maintain the safety of the public in Burnley - that’s our prime objective.

“We have got to take a strong line on this, although we should point out lots of other drivers stay within the law.

“Hopefully it will act as a deterrent now they know they could be caught out in undercover stings.”

Under council regulations, only registered black cabs can pick up fares which have not been pre-booked.

The seven drivers, who have been convicted following court hearings brought by Burnley Council, are due to face councillors at a licensing meeting later this year. Members have powers to revoke the licenses.

Meanwhile, two other cabbies caught out in the sting are awaiting court hearings.

Mohammed Arif, chairman of the Burnley Private Taxi Association, was unavailable for comment.
