AFTER six months of digging, water bosses have closed up a giant hole and pledged to create a nature haven.

United Utilities engin-eers have been working at Cornwall Avenue, Knuzden, since the summer, carving out a giant underground storm water tank.

The tank, which can hold 300 cubic metres of water, will stop local properties being flooded, by capturing excess water when there is heavy rain.

£20,000 is being spent to revamp the site with attractive planting and bird boxes.

The make-over has come courtesy of United Futures – a regeneration programme run by United Utilities and environ-mental charity Groundwork.

Mark Clinton, from United Utilities, said: “Life hasn't been easy for local residents, given the scale of the construction work on their doorsteps.

“We wanted to thank people for their patience, by transforming the site into an attractive community feature.”

The programme has seen United Utilities and Groundwork support dozens of community projects across the region. £2.3 million is being invested in grass roots schemes by March.
