A MUM-of-four has called for improved safety on a busy residential road after her daughter was hit by a car and broke her leg.

Kelly Howson, 27, said the injuries to her three-year-old daughter Kiara Mulholland, showed that improvements needed to be made to traffic calming measures in Bolton Avenue, Huncoat.

Local councillor Dave Parkins said urgent measures were needed to update safety mea-sures on the road, which is used by lorries and other heavy traffic to get to Whinney Hill tip and an industrial estate.

There are just two mini-roundabouts to break-up a long and straight stretch of the road from Burnley Road all the way through the Within Grove residential estate.

Coun Parkins said more needed to be done to warn youngsters of playing near the danger road.

Little Kiara broke her leg after running out into the road last week.

Her mum Kelly said the youngster escaped her attention for a second' and ran out into the road before she was hit by a motorist.

Kelly lives with Kiara as well as Callum, nine, Seamus, five, and Laila, two, in nearby Winder-mere Drive.

Coun Parkins said: "Bolton Avenue is a very dangerous road and is right in the middle of residential houses."

He said that current pedestrian 'refuge' islands in the road were dangerous because the road was too narrow.

Coun Parkins added: "I'm not sure what needs to be done but I know something has to happen.

"Someone is going to be very seriously injured if new safety measures are not put in place."

Something needs to be done on this road quickly. The situation is not helped by lorries constantly parking outside the paper shop, blocking the road and forcing traffic on to the opposite side. The road will only get busier if the new industrial estates are built at the bottom of the road.
