POLICE were called to a travellers’ site after reports a dog had bitten a resident.

Around five caravans arrived on land off Whinney Hill Road, Huncoat, on Tuesday morning.

Resident Francis Duckett, who lives on Enfield Road with his poorly wife, spoke to the travellers after he said their generators kept her awake.

The 78-year-old said: “One of the caravans is parked 20 feet away from my property.

“I went to see them at 11.30pm on Tuesday night and they had dogs barking. I went back yesterday morning and they had six dogs there.

“The police have been three times. We have lived here a long time and, at our time of life, we don’t want this.”

A police spokesman confirmed that officers were called to the site yesterday, but was unable to say whether any dogs had been seized.

She said: “We were called around 8.20am yesterday morning to reports that some dogs, thought to belong to some travellers, were running loose, and one of them had bitten the person who called us about it.”

Deputy leader at Hyndburn Council, Coun Clare Pritchard, said the travellers were on private land.

She added: “I’m keeping a close eye on it.

“It’s something we take very seriously and we are interested.

“The council can advise the owner of the site but we can’t move them.

“The owner will need to go to court and get an injunction, which they can actually do quicker than we can.

“The dog warden was on site yesterday after reports of a dangerous dog.”
