AN MP has backed calls for laws to protect service animals after a 'hero dog' visited a primary school.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones attended St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School in Great Harwood for the visit of retired police dog Finn.

The Lancashire Telegraph reported on Saturday year six pupils were given a visit after learning about how Finn was stabbed protecting his handler PC Dave Wardell while they were chasing a robbery suspect in Stevenage in 2016.

The pair are raising awareness of their campaign for ‘Finn’s Law’, looking for tougher government legislation to protect all service animals.

Mr Jones came along on the day to show his support for the pair and their campaign.

He said: "In my view there is clearly a gap in the law regarding service animals.

"They are putting their lives on the line in combat zones.

"I think their service should be recognised, they understand the jobs that they are doing.

"It was great to meet the young pupils.

"Finn is a fine example of a dog providing a fantastic public service.

"It was very commendable behaviour from the dog."

Finn suffered a punctured lung and the weapon came within an inch of his heart as vets battled to save his life.

The suspect was only charged with criminal damage for the injuries to Finn.
