VANDALS launched an attack on a Great Harwood home smashing windows and two cars on the driveway.

Patrick and Liz Mcginley were left terrified when they heard a large bang and the sound of car alarms going off at around 10.15pm on Sunday.

The couple believe they were targeted due to Mr Mcginley’s campaigning on local issues.

The 65-year-old was recently made chairman of the Hyndburn Conservative Association and stood as a candidate in May’s county council elections.

Mr Mcginley said: “We were at the back of the house when there was this almighty explosion and the car alarm going off.

“I ran to the front door but by the time I had unlocked the door they had gone.

“Every single window on my wife’s car was smashed including the windscreen and back window.”

They also smashed the windscreen, back window and one side window of Mr Mcginley’s car as well as two bay windows at the front of the house.

“It was a real mess,” he said.

“Our front lounge was completely sprayed with glass.

“We were up all night cleaning up.

“Thankfully we were not in the front room when it happened.”

Mr Mcginley, who has lived in the Whalley Road property for eight years, said he thinks they caused around £3,000 of damage.

He said: “The bodywork of the cars has been damaged as well.

“They must have used a sledgehammer. It had to be metal on metal.”

Mr Mcginley said he believes it was a result of him ‘trying to represent the community of Great Harwood on issues recently’.

“I think it was a targeted attack on my house. It was very frightening.

“I’m 65 and Liz is 66 and we do not deserve that. All we are trying to do is help the community.

“I am not a councillor. I just do my best to represent people on community issues."

The incident has been reported to police who have launched an investigation to find those responsible.

A police spokesman said: "Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has relevant information should call police on 101."
